By Lorna Bees
When does order become compulsion, and when can repetition begin to challenge faith? In Enigma of Numbers, Lorna Bees moves through three, five and eight to explore family, spirituality, symbolism and obsessive-compulsive patterns.
Three is not a number,
But a doorway.
God the Father,
God the Son,
God the Holy Spirit—
A trinity of lanterns
Guiding my trembling hands
Through the dark corridors.
Five is not a number,
But a gathering.
Solomon,
A mountain standing steady.
Jennifer,
A flame that keeps rising.
Harriet,
A river flowing with grace.
Peace,
A quiet wind through chaos.
Lorna,
A mirror reflecting them all—
A constellation of forces
Anchored in the sky.
Eight is not a shape,
But a river curling backwards,
A lemniscate of stars and shadows,
Endlessly carving infinity.
I stand between
Symbols and silence.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Arranging, counting
And arranging
In descending order,
Where numbers nudge
And hum like a warning,
Where every day whispers
Like a warning.
For what is faith
If devotion
Becomes repetition?
