Uganda Poetry Society Launches Global Flash Fiction Competition with 10 Academic Scholarships

By Philip Matogo

The Uganda Poetry Society invites writers from across the world to explore career transitions in an age of artificial intelligence through a 250-word flash fiction competition offering 10 academic scholarships.

As artificial intelligence continues to transform industries, reshape professions and redefine the skills required in the workplace, one question becomes increasingly important: What does the future of work hold for humanity?

The Uganda Poetry Society is inviting creative minds worldwide to explore this question through the power of storytelling.

Under the theme “Career Transitions in an AI World,” the Flash Fiction Writing Competition challenges participants to imagine, question and creatively interpret how artificial intelligence is changing careers, opportunities and human experiences.

Open to people of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds, the competition provides a platform for both emerging and established writers to share their perspectives while competing for academic scholarship opportunities.

About the Competition

Flash fiction is a form of storytelling that communicates a complete narrative in a limited number of words.

Participants are invited to submit an original flash fiction story of no more than 250 words, inspired by the theme Career Transitions in an AI World.

Stories may explore how artificial intelligence is transforming employment, creating new opportunities, replacing traditional roles, challenging human identity or redefining the meaning of work.

Whether realistic, speculative, humorous or thought-provoking, each story should demonstrate creativity, originality and a meaningful connection to the competition theme.

10 Academic Scholarships Available

The competition offers 10 academic scholarships, providing selected participants with opportunities to pursue further education and professional development.

Participants are encouraged to explore the available courses and identify programmes relevant to their educational or career aspirations.

Applicants should review the available programmes carefully. Scholarship coverage, course eligibility and enrolment conditions are subject to confirmation by the scholarship providers.

Who Can Participate?

The competition is open to participants worldwide, regardless of age, nationality, profession or educational background.

Students, working professionals, aspiring writers, experienced storytellers and anyone with a creative perspective on the future of work are welcome to participate.

No particular academic qualification or professional writing experience is required to submit a story.

How Winners Will Be Selected

Unlike competitions determined solely by a judging panel, the Flash Fiction Writing Competition will recognise stories based on their views and comments on the Fasihi Magazine website.

Once eligible entries are published, readers will have the opportunity to discover, read and comment on the stories.

The selection will consider two key measures:

1. Highest Views

Stories that attract the highest number of valid views on Fasihi Magazine will be recognised for their readership and reach.

2. Highest Comments

Stories that receive the highest number of genuine reader comments will be recognised for the conversations and engagement they generate.

The 10 academic scholarships will be awarded based on the competition’s views-and-comments selection criteria.

Participants are encouraged to share links to their published stories with friends, colleagues, communities and readers worldwide.

However, participation must remain fair. Artificially inflated views, automated refreshing, spam comments, fake identities and other forms of engagement manipulation are prohibited. Suspicious activity may be reviewed before the final results are confirmed.

The organisers will communicate any additional verification procedures and the final engagement-counting deadline.
