PEACE

By Davis Ndyomugabe of Qachecks

What does peace feel like when the world around us refuses to slow down? In Peace, Davis Ndyomugabe of Qachecks presents peace not simply as the absence of conflict, but as a quiet companion that calms the heart amid life’s chaos. Through fragrance, warmth, stillness and striking imagery, the poem asks us to slow down, breathe and remember that life is fleeting.

When peace is coming,
Her presence arrives in calmness.
She’ll drip in as soft breaths,
True as a caress of peace indeed.

As she moderates her speech,
She’s a refreshing feeling
Like no other, but
A positive fragrance of purity!

She is sweetness’s lift, sweeping flavour,
Softly she sifts through
With wowing scents of ecstasy.

As the tongue plays on the palate’s roof,
Pools of pure joy flow through,
Splashing warmth.

In valleys of peace
Is her fog and mist of happiness,
Settling down the heart
To calm pulsations,
Reaching out to lips
To smile with joy!

Peace has not been the absence of conflict,
But the silent arbiter
In chaos’s quieting stillness:

A witness present
In life’s stampeding streets of restlessness,
Ever steadying,
Imploring all to slow down,
Counselling that life is fleeting—

Why the heck do you hurry?

You can only live once!

Calm down!
Take your time!
There’s no rush in life!

Peace may be the orphan of chaos,
But she has been, since our conception,
A reliable presence
As our living companion.

Even in our solitudes,
As in our celebrations,
Not forgetting when
We put down our heads to rest…
