By Lorna Bees

In PTSD, Lorna Bees explores emotional instability, isolation and the uncertainty that can follow psychological distress. Through fragmented images, mismatched objects and sudden shifts between highs and lows, the poem asks whether even a small moment of hope can interrupt a prolonged season of suffering.

He comes and goes,
His ups and downs,
High like a kite,
Low like six feet below,

Wearing mismatched socks,
Speaking a universal language
Of forks and knives
Falling off the dinner table.

Throwing caution in the air,
He lies low, awake,
Like a sparrow alone
On a low rooftop,

With mismatched rhymes,
While the world
Knits its own opinion.

Is it true
That even the longest drought
Can be broken
By a slight drizzle?
