By Lorna Bees
What happens when the person you imagined spending a lifetime with becomes the source of your deepest pain? In Separation Anxiety Again, Lorna Bees explores heartbreak, attachment, memory and the painful contradiction of loving someone you may need to leave behind.
Each day carries its own picture,
Pictures that would never be seen again.
I always pictured you with me
For a lifetime,
Like a lifetime supply
Of amazing Sprite,
Like its amazing slogan:
Express yourself.
We simply expressed ourselves
Differently.
Differently in a way
That to live meant pain.
Experiencing pain by yourself
Is heartbreaking.
Heartbreaks only parading
To cardiac arrest.
When love means escaping
From each other,
Love has lost its symphony
To World War Three.
It takes ten decades to realise
That the people who matter the most
Will destroy you the most.
The person you could bring
The silver moon back to Earth for
Will happily plunder you ruthlessly,
Without accountability,
Forgetting your existence.
Love is like nothing
You read about in books.
Literally, the sun will set
Without you knowing.
Food will lose its colours
And divine flavours.
Daylight will decompose
To darkness at noon.
Blue skies will cry bitterly
With you in unison.
We could have actually
Made it together in life.
We could have outlived ourselves
And been bigger than
Our favourite bass line—
Amapiano.
Bigger than Amapiano itself,
Africa’s greatest gift
To the world.
