Before We Met romantic poem by Godwin the Poet

BEFORE WE MET

By Godwin the Poet

What was life like before you met the person who changed the meaning of love for you? In Before We Met, Godwin the Poet looks back at loneliness through the eyes of someone who has finally found companionship. Love once seemed distant, uncertain and almost impossible to define. However, meeting someone special changes that world. Through shadows, dictionaries, time zones, glowing eyes and familiar scents, the poem moves from solitude towards connection. In the end, the person who once felt impossible to find becomes something beautifully familiar: home.

Before we met,
I knew no one but myself.

Even my own shadow felt distant,
a stranger in the quiet of my loneliness.

Love was a fleeting ember,
warming cold nights
only to vanish at dawn.

Before we met,
life was an unsolved equation.

Each sunrise led to an empty sunset,
and love seemed a thousand miles away,

asleep in another time zone,
oblivious to my existence.

Before we met,
I read a million dictionaries,

but none defined me without you.

Every page spelled “U” and “I” together—

Simanyi,
or was it just a dream?

Yet here you are,

and I am glad
it took a lifetime to arrive.

Before we met,
I had never seen eyes that glowed,

never heard a voice
that sang through the air.

Even the breeze seemed to notice you—

it carried your scent.

And you…

you smelled like home.
