How long can someone keep giving before they finally release everything they have been holding inside? In Should I Abreact?, Kenganzi Anitah Maverick writes from a place of emotional exhaustion. The speaker is tired of begging for affection, chasing people who do not seem to care, and sacrificing pieces of herself simply to belong. Through a recurring question—“People, should I abreact?”—the poem explores love, rejection, emotional restraint and the longing to finally find peace.
Posing the same composure,
People, should I abreact?
I am only tired of begging you.
I need a man who can stay in the dew.
I can’t carry us anymore;
The preparations are made…
You say you love me,
But you don’t show it.
People, should I abreact?
I’m tired of bending all
To chase people who aren’t concerned.
I try to fit in,
Chasing smiles from those
Who don’t let me win…
Posing the same composure,
People, should I abreact?
I just want peace
Away from the chaos.
I’m done giving pieces
To hide myself, I purpose…
