What does it feel like to be healing while still hurting? In Messy Middle, Lucky Kagezi captures the contradictions that often accompany self-growth and self-discovery. The poem explores attention, self-sabotage, emotional vulnerability and self-acceptance. It is a brief reflection on that uncertain space between who we once were and who we are becoming.

I crave attention,
Yet I reject everything.

Addicted to self-growth,
But I self-sabotage.

I say I don’t care,
But I care too deep into my bones.

I am healing
And hurting at the same time.

For I listen,
Yet never do I say
What’s inside me.

I don’t really like myself,
But I love the person
I have become.
