I want to be home

I WANT TO BE HOME

By Okello-Kwena Amos (Kellna Hursle / thenorthpoet)

What does it mean to feel at home in a world that constantly demands more from us? In I Want To Be Home, Okello-Kwena Amos reflects on dreams, ambition, social expectations, belonging and the exhausting pursuit of a life that always seems just beyond reach. Through a series of deeply personal questions, the poem confronts the tension between chasing what society calls success and finding peace with who we already are.

Why should it always be this way?
To have dreams in your chest
and fightin’ with all your effort,
but then again fail to reach them.

If dreams are valid, then why can’t
we find contentment where
we are? Why must we aim for
higher stakes, day and night?

And why can’t we accept what
is thrown in front of us and take
that as the best thin’ ever, leavin’
the hauntin’ pains of the night behind?

We’ve got the life we want, but why
can’t we live it in peace? Why
must we coil for the blank
submission of society?

Askin’ myself questions of defiance:
Do we deserve to please society?
Do we need to live in relation to laws
that trap our hearts behind bars?

What must we do to feel who we are?
Should we keep livin’ a life
we didn’t subscribe to?
And why must we be born here
without our consent?

Wakin’ up every day to chase illusions—
wealth, belongin’ and peace—
isn’t that yet another form
of insanity?

To starve your feelings
for what’s missin’,
and in the end weep for everythin’
that slipped out of your hands—

the lost love,
the lost time,

only to get depressed
over the unfound version
of yourself.
