Love is not always presented as gentle, peaceful or comforting. Sometimes it arrives as something fierce enough to consume the people caught within it.

In Love of My Life, Kenganzi Anitah Maverick turns passion into fire. Crimson, scarlet and blood-red imagery run through the poem as desire becomes increasingly intense. Rather than portraying romance as something delicate, the poet imagines two lovers as flames—drawn together by a passion powerful enough to burn.

Crimson pulses, hearts combust,
love like fire, burning reckless lust.
Veins of passion, blood-red rage,
in crimson shadows we Cape…..

Desire’s a beast, claws in deep.
You and I, like flames, violently leap.
Scarlet screams, skin on fire,
crimson love, our hearts expire.
