The arrival of a child brings a new melody into a family. In Sonnet’s Melody!, Davis Ndyomugabe of Qachecks celebrates the birth of his first granddaughter, Princess Regina Sonnet Karabo Akeine, on her second day of life. Filled with gratitude, tenderness and playful imagery, the poem welcomes a newborn whose smiles, cries and presence have already filled her family’s home with joy.

Believe you the glory
And wonders of God!

His blessings and grace
Far outweigh our expectations.

Princess Regina Sonnet Karabo Akeine is here with us.
Sonny is now two days old!

Her jelly smiles
Are delicious melts,
Delightfully sweet.

Her warmth is tendered
By her brilliantly sparkling eyes,

And her cries
Are her small songs
In delicious melodies.

Hear her rising,
Pealing sopranos soar!

They’re the finest,
Sweet engagements in muse.

Her voice echoes,
Blustering in rejoicing,
Like our pealing chimes.

And the leaflets of her message
Are charming hooks of spells.

She’s beautiful.
She’s lovely.

Her head, honestly held high,
Has honoured her heart’s harmony.

Her hands hitting here
Have us hollering:
Hello! Hello! Hello!

Her soft lips
Have eternal lipstick,
Dipped in honey and money!

Smell thee her sensuous lips—

They’re glowing charms of ecstasy,
Enriched in glowing glory.

As grace’s joy reigns
In cherry blossoms of cheers,

We crack cackles
At her in happiness and joy.

This princess
Of the Qachecks green valleys
Is our precious angel,

A joy in our hearts and home,
Lifting us up to rejoice.

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?

You shall always shine
So brightly in our hearts,

For you are more pleasant to us
Than sunshine at noon.

You have melted our hearts
Beyond infinite hedges
Of satisfaction.

Forever rhyme in our hearts
Your angelic songs,

That happiness may never wane
In our hearts and homes.

For you have been gladly received
With gratitude.

You are forever endorsed
By our undying love,

Even to the summit
Of your ripeness
And evening’s sunset!

Touch our feelings,
Filling us more
With your songs.

We can’t have enough of you,

Forever and ever,
And forever,
Again and again…
