By Davis Ndyomugabe of Qachecks
Can solitude become a place of peace rather than loneliness? In Solitude, Davis Ndyomugabe of Qachecks invites the reader to sit quietly beneath a tree and listen. A heartbeat, birdsong, barking dogs, crickets and the evening breeze gradually become part of nature’s music. Through stillness and self-reflection, the poem explores how being alone can become a peaceful journey towards oneself.
If, for a moment, you were to sit down,
Say, like sitting under the shade of a tree,
And be yourself, as one with your soul in solitude,
Keeping quiet, silent and still;
Listening to your drumming heartbeats,
Slowly, you will embrace
The melodies of the heart’s pulsations
As you sip on the chorusing radio din-din muse in your ears.
A barking stray dog in the distance will echo,
Like dots connecting the symphony.
When sopranos of the hooting owl
Atop a dry tree ring,
The hums of little birds chirping
Shall rise in hilarious harmonies
To lure away your loneliness.
At that moment, you’ll cease to be alone,
But become alive, as one
In communion with nature
And the universe…
At that time, in the waning hours of the day,
Seemingly tired and drunken,
The sun shall continue staggering,
Drowning into the embracing night,
Just as the birds are finalising
Their enchanting praise for the day’s work,
And the butterflies shall slow
Their dancing pace.
The crickets shall raise their tempo,
Voicing in exaltation.
Their melodies shall slap your ennui
In humming sirens,
As the bullfrogs’ croaking booms
Shall roar, stirring the night’s musicals.
At that moment,
The grace of tranquillity
Shall abide in your solitude…
It’s then that you’ll notice
A late ant hurrying with its load,
As a lonesome worm
Crawls and creeps along.
A centipede will be seen
Greeting a millipede
As the whips of a slow breeze
Blow through.
Blistering smiles and laughs
Of the waving leaves
Shall be seen and heard
In supplicant, whispering whistles.
Instantly, a calming smile
Shall cross your lips,
Emerging ever so softly
Like the ghost of pure peace!
Listlessly, you’ll widen your gaze
In gratitude,
As your inner voice
Suddenly begins to nudge,
As if talking with you,
Person to person:
One on one with yourself!
Not even the whizzing
Of troublesome mosquitoes
Shall distract you,
For being one on one with yourself
Is a solemn pilgrimage.
And whenever you’re in that ecstasy,
Only the blessings of joy can surpass
The peace that no man can understand!
