Kampala rarely runs out of something to talk about. In The Kampala Acheta, Kenganzi Anitah Maverick takes readers through a fast-moving portrait of the city’s drama, gossip, social media moments and everyday absurdities. Mixing English with Luganda expressions and Kampala street humour, the poem captures a city where one spectacle quickly gives way to another—and sometimes the only response left is “olemwa!”
You saw the Kampala drama,
From you, me, to King Frama.
Definitely, you didn’t see it come.
The lugambo—
Me, anti mba nzije, here I come.
The Red Devils attacking sunshine,
Kampala kings, olemwa!
I forgot to ask
Why the water was captured.
Then there is the grass.
Anti grass, after losing,
He settled for some millions.
Kampala kings, olemwa!
Here we go—
Social media sells the diamond early king.
Before I knew,
Yilizi is called obutiiti.
Shaaa! I exclaim,
Same ones with reeds.
Kampala people, olemwa!
Immediately, I land on a concert
Thrown by a stupid fellow…
Talking a lot of ant hills,
And you attend—
Lack of common reason.
Before you land on Aunt John Mary
With a fellow man in women’s clothes;
Kampala is a daily
See and move on…
