How long should someone continue paying emotionally for mistakes they have already acknowledged? In Don’t Remind Me!, Ama Poetry speaks to anyone who keeps reopening the wounds of another person’s past. The speaker does not deny making mistakes. However, they refuse to let those mistakes become a permanent identity. Instead of condemnation, the poem asks for a new song—one that recognises growth, change and the possibility of becoming someone new.
Don’t remind me of my dark past;
every time you sing it,
I hear condemnation—
the voltage that shocks
my fragile heart.
I’m not denying my follies,
but how long must I grieve
over spilled milk?
Don’t remind me
of my dark past.
Sing to me
a new, vibrant song—
the Israel I am.
