Can the heart simply stop loving someone because the relationship appears destined to fail? In Teach Me to Unlove!, Ama Poetry presents a woman caught between love, warning signs and the wishes of her parents. She dreams of marriage with her “Romeo,” yet troubling visions suggest that his past may threaten their future. At the same time, circumstances repeatedly keep the lovers apart. Her parents also oppose the relationship and urge her to walk away. Still, love remains. Torn between what her heart desires and what those around her fear, she finally asks for something far more difficult than falling in love: to be taught how to unlove.
“I am marrying this maiden!”
Hasn’t my Romeo
written our vision on hoardings?
Yet, thy jealous angels
deliberately refuse to run with it.
Haven’t they haunted me
through dreams,
beseeching me to walk away,
claiming he is a lad
whose hands are stained with blood
from destroying the marital future
of many maidens
who now cry out to thee
for justice?
Haven’t thy angels
frustrated our trysts,
always conflicting our schedules,
always plotting mishaps
on our treks to our arbors?
Haven’t they terrified
my beloved parents too,
with visions of him
in a newly opened tomb,
invoking the demons
to possess him…
propelling them
to denounce me
for choosing to be with him
despite their ultimatums?
But they are
my beloved parents.
Can any maiden thrive
in any romantic relationship
without the endorsement
of her parents?
Oh thou!
Who ignites, rekindles
and blows out love,
teach me to unlove
my Romeo…

Wow❤️. You are truly destined for greatness. This is a very interesting piece
This is so powerful. Unloving is really much harder than falling in love
At least there are children in this generation who believe that their parents say is important for their marital destinies. Thank you, Ama Poetry for always writing.
Nice poem indeed, typical of what happens to most of us
