By MK Kuol
Sometimes an ordinary act of kindness can become enormous when imagined from another creature’s perspective. In Rescue, MK Kuol turns a small encounter between a human and a drowning fly into a meditation on mercy, survival and how the rescued might understand their rescuer.
when, this afternoon,
a fly fell into my cup of water,
i let him drown not. instead,
i gently spooned him out & watched
over him until he gathered himself
& whirred away. perhaps now.
perhaps now, he is somewhere telling
his friends, with a halted face, how god,
in his boundless kindness, retrieved
him from the cold grab of death.
